Hello to all of our friends & customers!

We would like to let you know our exciting news and our plans for the future.

We were offered a teaching position by the UGA (University of Georgia) studies abroad program in Cortona, Tuscany, Italy. We will be teaching the Metals part of the program and are very excited about the opportunity. The whole family will be moving to this old Etruscan Hilltop city in January and look forward to the experience of a lifetime. We will not be returning until the summer.

This of course means certain changes on the home front. We will be closing MADE shop and Studio after the Holidays and look forward to exploring new opportunities that have presented themselves upon our return.

So, if you would like to pop in one last time to wish us luck and for us to have the chance to say good-bye; now is the time!

For Holiday Shoppers, we are extending our hours and will be open everyday until we close (Dec. 24th) and are offering a 20% discount on all MADE Studio jewelry and sculpture, as well as discounts on lots of design pieces.

Valentine's Day is approaching and so I asked myself a question: do I really feel compelled to give, and receive something from my husband just because it is deemed a romantic holiday, not to mention the gross commercialism of the whole thing??? One part of me rejects the whole notion of a day where people give each other gifts of love because they are supposed to, or they feel it will right all the wrongs between them. However, the other part of me says yes, while St Valentine's day could be considered cliche and commercial, it still remains the day that you can declare your love and offer a token of that love to your special person. It may even give a person the courage to tell someone how they feel about them for the very first time or the day that you get an anonymous card in the mail (or slipped under your door), full of undying passionate words of how they feel about you.
So here's to Pope Galasius 1 who in 496AD declared that February 14th would be traditionally the day on which lovers express their love for each other!

Keisuke Serizawa Calendars and Fans

Arrived today - Keisuke Serizawa - Fans and soon at least 8 Calendars from the 70's. Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984) was a Japanese textile designer. In 1956, he was designated as a Living National Treasure for his katazome stencil dyeing technique by the Japanese government. Serizawa visited Okinawa several times and learned the Ryukyu bingata techniques of dyeing. Serizawa was also a leading member of the mingei movement founded by Yanagi Soetsu. His folk art includes kimono, paper prints, wall scrolls, folding screens, curtains, fans and calendars. Serizawa has also produced numerous masterpieces in illustrated books.

Well I found a very very interesting item today at the Flea Market definitely a keeper by this FRENCH Genius - learn more about him here - Jacques Monestier

Man this guy is a WIZARD - super cool with untold talent and vision. For once I really do not know what to say or how to describe what this person does - so click on the link and see for yourself. Here is a couple of shots of what I found - it is a Music Box. About 8" Tall - Wood box, paint, Copper, Bronze, Brass, Paper cutouts with drawings on them - plays music . If I had a device to record video I would - look for potential updates.

I know many people have used rock in many different ways to make cool stuff. We collected rock from a few different beaches when we were in the U.P... All I (dave)have ever done with the rocks is put them in one of my many little cubbies and said to myself I will use them someday.

Well I did make a very cool set of four pins using small agates and such from Michigan and spelled out the word ROCK each letter was a separate pin.... That was in the late 90's ish. ME no sell da pins - they were lifted by some loser, looking for free cheese and wine whilst at Velvet da Vinci in San Francisco during one of there many show openings - I was kinda hoping they would show up at a flea market or thrift store in San Fran - that would be cool..
Has anyone seen them?

One other thing I did with some of the rocks was fill gaps in my tile job in our new killer shower. They work well.

I also sent some to my jeweler friend Terri Logan - she makes rock jewelry.

Well I now have a new hoard of rocks and have made a couple "worry/smile/be happy stones" - the kind you put in your pocket and rub when you are buying a lottery ticket or when you are stressed or just because its something to rub -

My DAD has the first one - and the first one is always the best.

Niagara Falls - PURE BLISS!

Well - forgot to mention in the Michigan post that we stopped at Niagara Falls on the way - cause that's what families do..... Couple of things happened while we were there.

1) The Canadian side of the Falls is "cheesy"
2) While it was raining on our trip before we got to the falls - the HARD stuff was saved for our arrival.
a)when I say hard stuff I mean BUCKETS of water millions of them, no probably BILLIONS all poured on us...
3) WE were committed no turning back - also NO rain gear and 58 degrees.....
4)OH - the parking lot was at least 1/4 mile away and was 20 BUCKS.

We walked to the falls convincing ourselves it was worth it, had the camera in a plastic bag so it did not get wrecked - - took a few "candid" shots of the FAM and then it was time to leave - the shivering had begun. Got to the car and all of us had to change our clothes (we were completely soaked) and then drive another 400 miles to our destination 1/2 way to the U.P. just north of Saginaw - Got there around midnight and checked in at the Fairfield Inn with the toothless receptionist. - When I am looking to hire a person to greet hotel guests I am a firm believer in LESS (teeth) is more.

Well - the new year full of opportunity - for us crafty types is almost upon us - and for once in our lives I think our decision is a wise one - NO WHOLESALE shows - If any of you gallery peoples would like to continue to sell our work please contact us via email or on the phone and we will figure something out. This year 2009 has been very strange - no need to bore you with details but lets just say challenging in every respect. We are also going to be making more "one of a kind" type items - what you see is what you get. Perhaps offering the pieces here on the BLOG - first come first serve. I am not expecting a line around the block for the pieces but we need to try something new once again. Beyond sick of doing the "Craft Show" thing which never really worked from day one - unless of course you do 5000 shows a year have no children and live in a RV with a built in MOBILE Studio..... Exciting to think that I do not have to pack and unpack the van with the prospect of raking in hundreds of dollars - (we are talking PURE profit). So give us a ring or drop us an email and lets get this thing rollin'-----------------------

Well - The Keweenaw Peninsula in the U P of Michigan is a place I have been traveling to since before I could walk. My Grandparents retired to their birthplace in 1979 - Lake Linden MI....... Boomin up until the 20's with the copper mining industry. This is a magical place - hard to describe unless you have been there. Many beaches, cool weather, lots of relatives, bears, rocks, wolves, mosquitoes, fish, light outside until almost 11pm, thimble berry jam, people who talk like Canadians - Including my 97 year old Grandmother. I love this place.

I suppose I was not thinking clearly when I thought that people might want me to make mores changes. Silly me. Stay tuned for more stupid ideas coming soon as I am full of them.

I decided to make a change today so I did - you can see from the photo that the change is not very big (just over 2.25") but it is still a change. I think everyone should make a change - it was quite enjoyable and it only took me an hour or so.

If you decide that you do not have the time to make a change I will offer my change to you. Here is how I envision it! I make many "changes" for whomever does not want to make one for themselves. As an added bonus - your friends might think that you made a change. (for this benefit there will be no charge) You let me know that you would like a change - via email. I wait until I have an appropriate amount of changes to make and then I get em done.

If you would like others to know that you have a change, I will make it easy for you and make the change so it can be worn (as a pin - necklace for and additional fee). I will charge you for the change making and I will promise to DONATE 10 percent of the change making fee to a "CAUSE" that has yet to be determined. Because the change is only 2.25" the fee will be nominal - estimated to be - $22 USD - the price will include shipping in the continental USA - however I will gladly send changes to any location worldwide for an added fee. (As I fully believe everyone everywhere needs a change)

Now I know what some of you may be thinking - This guy likes OBAMA - well I did vote for him but he is still a politician and politicians no matter what the party are still politicians. The important part to me is, that if we all change even a little (2.25 inches) we can help to make this planet a better place to live.

I am completely serious about making changes and about donating 10% to a good cause. One thing I need to figure out is WHAT CAUSE. Can you please help me pick one - I was thinking along the lines of a:

1) GREENER CLEANER PLANET
2) HELPING DISADVANTAGED PEOPLE HERE IN THE USA
3) HELPING THOSE WITH NO HEALTH INSURANCE - its only 47 million
4) FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY HERE
5) ?
6) ?
and so on.....................................................................................................................................

I will pick one as soon as is appropriate and let you know - I will also be offering changes to people via EBAY and ETSY - I hope to make lots of them.

The studio is cleanish and the pelican is done?

Well- I guess we have been somewhat busy - or your could say distracted. The MINI show at the Historical society went better than expected - (we expected nothing) and then back into the studio - I spent three days CLEANING and reorganizing - what a mess - Also trying to prepare for the colder weather - no real heat in the studio - just a space heater - It gets kinda cold in the foot zone. WE have noticed that things have really S L O W E D D O W N as far as galleries goes which is a bit scary. Maybe we should move to EUROPE - OH can't afford that either. It is going to be three long months. Am I complaining? I guess a bit - but really it is just reality. Back down to the unheated 6.5' tall, cramped, crammed, too small, crappy studio for a day of unparalleled fun.

On another note - the Pelican is 95% finished and I will ship it out next week - after I get my Wisdom teeth extracted on Friday afternoon - I can't wait to have them yanked - once again unparalleled fun. - WE here at MADE are all about FUN.

I need to figure out why I wish to have a blog

- Is it a diary/journal
- am I an entertaining fellow
- is it to generate interest
- to share what is happening currently
- because I have nothing better to do
- not enough work in the studio to keep me busy
- I suppose it is some of all of those things

- But my MAIN reason is to generate interest in what we do as makers and at the same time to make it interesting and perhaps a bit entertaining

- Hopefully - the making will pick up soon and I will be happy enough not to question my reasons for blogging

1)Need to place an order for materials
2)Need to send a disk for the Tyler alumni show
3) Need to finish the Pelican
4) Need to start on November orders
5)Need to clean the studio
6)Need to warm up the frigid studio
7)Need to pick up work from that Place I will not mention
8)Need to get all the @#$?#$@ checks we are owed
9) so I can pay for the materials
10) Blah Blah Blah

Just becacause I say so - Making a living selling your work means just that - It does not count if you have a significant other that has a "real" job, nor does it count if you are receiving some sort of trust fund or equivalent. All you get to count is the actual money made producing your "ART" - what ever that may be. One more thing you gotta pay for your own Health Insurance. Am I asking alot?

This was my favorite hat - I wore it until it was falling off my head and people started to ask me why I did not just get a new hat? I would say things like -

"this is my favorite hat" ...

"I should have bought two" ....

"What? It still looks good" - -

Then I gave up trying to convince people that my hat was good and threw it in the chimney of Shawn Irelands Wood Kiln at cone 7 - It did not last long and I need a new hat just like this one. If you ever see one even second hand - snag it. I have a very big head - and it fits me - J CREW made it. I will be waiting by the mail box for my new hat.

This site is a really great one and Marbeth Schon sells both MADE work and work by just me David Jones along with many of the Grand Daddys and Grand Mothers of modernistic jewelry design - thats a mouthful but the site is well worth at least 20 minutes of your time - perhaps more. Let me know what you think if you are so inclined.
